IWDVS offers training which helps practitioners to develop and enhance skills in working with culturally and linguistically diverse women and children who experience domestic violence and other forms of gender based violence. Some examples of the training sessions include:
- Cross cultural assessment skills for risk assessment for domestic violence.
- Culturally competent safety planning for domestic violence.
- Working with children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Research and consultation with culturally and linguistically diverse groups
- Culturally specific information about different cultures to enhance cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Models of support groups for culturally and linguistically diverse women
- Advanced skills in working with interpreters
Public training will be advertised. Please register yourself on IWDVS mailing list to receive notification of our training.
Training may also be customized to meet the needs of organizations and groups. The training will be developed to meet the identified needs. Training fees are negotiable.
As a statewide organization, IWDVS is able to offer this training to rural areas.
Community Education
IWDVS delivers interesting and engaging community education sessions about domestic violence to
community groups such s women groups and AMES and TAFE student groups. On many occasion
community education is delivered in the community’s own language. Community
education sessions range from short presentations to two hour sessions. The aim of the community
education is to raise awareness of domestic violence among culturally and linguistically diverse
community groups in a way that is respectful and valuing of diverse
perspectives of domestic violence. The training seeks to empower communities to reflect on their
attitudes and assumptions about domestic violence. The community groups are empowered through being
informed of laws, services and their rights. Community education is provided free of charge.
